VISION QUEST: A WILDERNESS VIGIL
An eight-day passage into solitude, nature, soul and spirit
STRATHBOGIE RANGES, VIC
October 10th - 17th
We don't always go into the wilderness to find new answers…
We go because something inside us is asking to be heard.
Throughout much of human history, people have entered periods of solitude, fasting and wilderness as a way of marking important thresholds in life.
To step away from ordinary responsibilities. To leave behind familiar patterns. To listen to the living world. To contemplate the great questions. To honour a transition. To encounter the mysteries of life, death and rebirth.
The wilderness vigil is one expression of this ancient human impulse.
For a period of time, we simplify.
We become quiet.
We pay attention.
We allow ourselves to become more available to what’s moving beneath the surface of everyday life. An opportunity to brush up against something more real and true. To deepen the conversation of heart and soul.
There is no particular answer you’re required to find. No vision you’re required to receive. No version of yourself you’re required to become.
Sure, the big answers, the vision, the becoming - all of that’s possible.
But the greater invitation perhaps, is simply to listen.
The Wilderness Vigil is one of the most simple yet profoundly powerful initiation rites in our modern era.
While some people know the term Vision Quest through the indigenous traditions of North America, similar practices of extended solitude and fasting in nature have existed in many cultures and forms throughout human history.
At its heart, the practice is remarkably simple and follows the classic architecture of a traditional initiatory passage rite:
Severance
Threshold
Return
Initially, we step away from the familiar. The technology. The schedules. The responsibilities. The constant stimulation. The well-worn identities and roles through which we move through the world. We sever from the ordinary and create space by entering the wilderness.
We cross the threshold into the unknown.
For four days and four nights, you remain alone in your Quest Circle, or Dreaming Wheel. You fast. You sit. You watch. You listen. You encounter the landscape outside you and within you.
There’s nowhere to perform. Nothing to achieve. Nothing to consume. Only the invitation to remain present to what is.
Eventually, you leave the wilderness and return home to your people. But what happened out there needs time to settle. To be felt. To be understood. To be lived. The return is where the experience begins finding its place within ordinary life.
Many suggest that this is where the quest has an opportunity to ripen and bear fruit. If only we continue to show up for the conversation and to keep on listening.
People arrive at the threshold of the wilderness from many different livestyles and circumstances.
There is no single reason to Quest.
You might feel called because:
You’re at a crossroads
You’re moving through a significant life transition
Something in your life is ending
Something new is beginning
You feel disconnected from yourself
There’s an old wound asking to be tended
You’re carrying pain and grief that needs to be felt
You’re exhausted by the noise of modern life
You want to spend meaningful time alone
You have big questions that don't have easy answers
You want to reconnect with nature
You want to listen more deeply to heart, soul and spirit
You’re curious about the mysteries of life
You want to mark an important chapter of your life
You feel a quiet pull that you can't quite explain
Or perhaps you simply need some time away from everything
You don't need to arrive with a grand vision for your life. You don't need to know exactly what you're looking for. Sometimes the call is simple there.
And it’s up to us to answer it.
What happens when you become quiet enough to listen?
Imagine waking beneath a dark moon sky full of stars.
There’s no phone. No social media. No notifications. No entertainment. No work. No draining conversations. No ordinary calendar schedule to adhere to.
Nowhere to go.
Nothing to do.
For four days and four nights, you remain alone in a small circle in the wilderness. Wind whispers through the trees. Birds call across the landscape. The weather changes.
The light moves across the mountain. The night becomes very dark. The creatures of the forest speak to you in mysterious ways.
Nothing but you and the wild emanation of nature; of spirit.
This is the way our ancestors have longed tuned their ear to the living earth.
You fast
You sit with your thoughts
You encounter your memories
You create more space to meet your burning questions
You notice your feelings and the landscape of your body
You listen to country and the pulse of the wild and natural world
And gradually, something begins to shift. Not necessarily because something extraordinary happens.
It might.
And it often does.
But what’s more true is that there’s finally enough space to notice what’s been there all along.
Vision Quest presents a clear invitation to thoughtfully address some of life’s big questions.
What it doesn't do is promise you a revelation.
You may receive clarity.
You may encounter grief.
You may become aware of an old wound.
You may find yourself asking better questions rather than receiving answers.
You may experience beauty, wonder, loneliness, fear, boredom, discomfort, longing, peace. You may have a profound encounter with nature. You may discover new things about yourself. You may revisit painful memories and unfinished stories. You may simply become more aware of what’s been present all along.
And sometimes, nothing dramatic happens at all.
The value of a passage rite isn't necessarily measured by how extraordinary the experience was. Sometimes the work is simply to show up. To remain present. To listen. To be willing to have a deeper conversation with your life.
None of it’s a guarantee for profound transformation.
But there is an invitation to encounter the wild unknown.
A wilderness vigil can create conditions for questions that are difficult to sit with amidst the noise of everyday life.
Who am I?
What am I longing for?
What am I needing to grieve?
What is asking for my attention?
Where am I still abandoning myself?
How are my wounds and gifts related?
What medicines do I have to offer the world?
Who are my people and how am I serving them?
What is being asked of me in this current season of life?
These aren't questions that necessarily have neat and tidy answers.
And perhaps they shouldn't.
The wilderness doesn't necessarily give us all the answers…
But it can give us a deeper relationship with the questions.
What’s included in this experience?
Eight days fasting in the wilderness.
DAYS 1–2: PREPARATION
These first days are about orientation, preparation and co-creating the container for the vigil. After settling into basecamp we deepen our work with group council and intention clarifying, site selection and wilderness safety, shelter preparation, contextualizing personal ceremony, preparing for solitude, and establishing your Quest Circle / Dreaming Wheel.
The aim isn't to tell you what your vigil should be.
It's to help you arrive prepared enough to meet it.
DAYS 3–6: THE VIGIL
You cross the threshold and enter your individual Quest Circle. For four days and four nights you’ll have no food, no phone, no technology, no entertainment, no ordinary contact with the outside world, not even a tent.
You’ll have water, a tarp for shelter, clothing and warmth appropriate for the conditions, and very basic equipment. You remain in solitude within the natural landscape. You sit. You observe. You listen. You rest. You engage with your personal ceremony.
You allow the experience to unfold exactly as it’s meant to, in genuine solitude.
DAYS 7–8: RETURN & INTEGRATION
You return from your Quest Circle and rejoin basecamp. Food is gradually reintroduced. We gather. We share. We listen. We begin the process of reincorporation.
There is no requirement to have had a dramatic experience. There is no hierarchy of experience. Everyone returns with something different. The work is to meet what has been encountered with honesty and care.
Eventually, the real work begins with the journey back to loved ones, community and the world at large.
This is what you can expect to receive:

“MONUMENTALLY LIFE ALTERING”
- Maurice Parfait
“I can’t express how monumentally life altering this experience was for me… emerging as a man with renewed vitality, greater clarity of the bigger vision, and my power and place in manifesting it.
And most importantly, with the beautifully heavy responsibility and commitment of service to my tribe and progress toward my North Star.”
“ONE OF THE MOST PROFOUND EXPERIENCES OF MY LIFE…”
- Bronte Spicer
“This Vision Quest by far, was one of the most profound experiences of my life. It gave me the time and space to be honest with myself, look at what I had been avoiding and find a way forward in my life that felt right.
The Quest reignited my seemingly long-lost connection to spirit, it helped me remember that magic is real and that nature provides the medicine we need.”
“I AM MORE ME THAN I HAVE EVER BEEN...”
- Elise West
“Before the Vision Quest, I was stuck in an old story - I’d shed a former version of self, yet still felt lost… deep down I was still striving for perfection before I could fully accept myself again. During my Quest I consciously chose to step out of that narrative.
The dust is still settling, but I can feel I am now more me than I have ever been, perfectly imperfect, human, and finding home within myself. The way Caiyuda facilitates with a balance of reflections/nudges vs giving space for self responsibility/self direction is beautiful.”
“THE MOST POWERFUL TRANSFORMATION EVER…”
- Peter Ballas
“After meeting Caiyuda, I completed my first Vision Quest at 58 years old in Oct 2024. It was THE most powerful transformation process I had ever experienced.
Caiyuda’s facilitation, guidance, and ability to hold space was first class. I emerged from the VQ with my bone pile formally buried; a metaphorical death and a clearer vision of who I was. And more importantly, who I wasn’t.”
“PROFOUND HEALING & INNER WISDOM”
- Gaia Burgess
“What an exceptional experience you created for us all. The most sacred and yet daunting thing I have ever done. I’m envisioning what the new ‘Book of Gaia’ looks like and what I want to bring into my life, alongside my medicine gifts to offer community & spirit.
I’ve been simmering in my new inner wisdom and integrating this profound experience. I’m forever grateful for the profound healing that I received.
I would recommend this to any one who is up for a challenge and who is willing to go within… who really wants to move their soul to evolve, grow, expand, push the boundaries and become the person they want to be.”

Frequently Asked Questions
-
A Vision Quest is a wilderness-based rite of passage rooted in ancient traditions. It involves spending time in nature, in solitude, in a small circle, to connect deeply with yourself, your purpose, and the natural world.
This experience includes fasting, introspection, and spiritual guidance, with experienced facilitators in a supportive environment.
-
This experience is for men and women alike.
You don't need to know exactly why you're being called.
This may be right for you if you:
Feel yourself at a threshold.
Are moving through a significant life transition.
Are carrying grief or an unresolved question.
Feel called to spend meaningful time alone.
Want to reconnect with nature.
Want to explore your relationship with soul and spirit.
Are curious about the mysteries of life.
Need space away from the pace of ordinary life.
Have questions that can't be answered by thinking harder.
Want to mark the ending of one chapter or the beginning of another.
Feel a quiet pull toward the wilderness.
Are willing to encounter yourself without knowing beforehand what you'll find.
You don't need to arrive with certainty. You don't need to arrive with a grand vision. You don't need to have everything figured out.
What you do need, is a willingness to listen.
-
No previous wilderness or camping experience is required.
During preparation, you'll receive guidance around:
Choosing an appropriate Quest site.
Reducing environmental and wilderness hazards.
Setting up a simple tarp shelter.
Staying warm and dry.
Carrying only what is necessary.
Signalling and emergency procedures.
Preparing appropriately for your time alone.
This isn't a test of your survival skills.
The wilderness is the setting. The deeper practice is attention.
Many participants are first-timers and find their solo time in nature deeply empowering.
-
A detailed equipment list will be provided after confirmation of your place in the program. Items fall into two categories: basecamp gear, and the bare necessities of what you need out in your Quest circle.
Typical items include weather-appropriate clothing, a sleeping bag, a tarp for shelter, and personal essentials. Minimalism is encouraged to help you connect with the simplicity of the experience.
-
During the central portion of the program, yes.
You will spend four days and four nights alone in your individual Quest Circle, or Dreaming Wheel.
The first two days and final day and a half are spent together at basecamp for preparation and integration.
Depending on the safety protocols implemented for the gathering, there may be a daily wellbeing check during the solo period.
-
The group dynamic that forms for each program often seems to contain the medicine that we most need at the time.
Generally the group dynamic is an equal split, however every so often it’s skewed in one direction.
All participants have been vetted through the same Pre-Screen Intake Form to ensure suitability and alignment with the values, vision and agreements of the Earth Wisdom Association.
Because of this, the group of people that come together for these programs is typically of a high calibre, creating a container that allows for emotional vulnerability and to be held by a solid group dynamic.
-
Vision Quest does not incorporate plant medicine.
It's important to note that Vision Quest is an immensely powerful process in it's own right.
The wilderness, fasting, solitude, ceremony and relationship with nature are the practice.
The intention is to become more receptive to what emerges naturally through the conditions of the vigil.
-
Part of the preparation material after your confirmation in this program includes guidance on how to appropriately prepare for your 4 days and 4 nights of fasting in your Dreaming Wheel.
While you won’t be eating during your time in Quest, you will have adequate water to keep you hydrated.
Everybody responds different to fasting. Some participants experience moments of fogginess or discomfort during the process. This is a normal part of fasting, as the body adjusts to operating without food.
With appropriate preparation, most people find it to be an easeful transition— tapering off your caloric intake at basecamp, to fasting only on water in your Quest circle, and then slowly reintroducing food upon your return back to camp.
-
The Vision Quest proceeds in most weather conditions. Connecting with and being at the mercy of the elements is part of the experience.
We keep a close eye on severe weather conditions —such as thunderstorms and bushfires— through appropriate emergency apps, and will make decisions accordingly based on the safety of all participants.
-
Before you go out, you’ll receive thorough guidance on how to choose a safe site and minimize risks.
While our primary facilitator is Wilderness First Aid trained, you’ll also be encouraged to bring your own First Aid Kit for basic needs, and be equipped with a signalling system (like a whistle or other agreed method) to call for help if necessary.
This experience isn’t necessarily about testing your wilderness survival skills but about deepening your connection with yourself and nature; spirit. Most participants find that with preparation, their time alone feels empowering rather than dangerous.
-
Integration, also known as incorporation or “the return” is a key part of the process. Some say that the real Quest begins after your formal Vision Quest ends. We’ll gather online, approx. 2-3 weeks after Quest, to keep the energy and momentum of Quest alive, and to help you reflect on your insights and integrate them into your daily life.
-
The final day and a half are dedicated to return and reincorporation.
We'll gather, share and begin making sense of what has been encountered.
Approximately 2–3 weeks later, we'll meet online for an integration call.
But integration doesn't necessarily end there. Sometimes the meaning of a Quest takes time. There may be things you understand immediately. Other things may continue unfolding for months or years.
-
You don't need to feel completely fearless or 100% certain.
A degree of uncertainty is natural.
The more important question might be:
Are you willing?
Willing to step away from the familiar.
Willing to be alone.
Willing to be uncomfortable.
Willing to listen.
Willing to encounter something you didn't expect.
And willing to let the experience be what it actually is, rather than demanding that it become something particular.
-
We maintain a firm boundary regarding refunds in our Terms & Agreements, which helps to maintain the integrity of the container and your unwavering commitment to the path ahead.
In appreciation and honour of this service, your commitment to attending, and the entire organisation of this gathering, donations remain non-refundable.If cancellation occurs prior to 28 days of this gathering, your donation (minus 25% admin cancellation fee) can be used as credit for a later date, or exchanged with someone else who is interested in filling your place, provided they are approved to participate.
